Julia Cocuzza
| I have a deep affection and respect for the city and the dwellers of all sorts that define it. I illustrate such environments, paying particular attention to public cultural spaces, local nightlife, and architecture. Urban life and the culture and creativity that radiates from it is also influential to my technical approach. I emphasize rhythm, color, jagged shapes, aggression, depth, motion, and music. Incorporating these elements by way of hard angles and brushstrokes, intense contrasts, and fragmented space, my style at times is reminiscent of Cubism or certain types of graffiti art. I amplify light and manipulate depth, distorting forms into passing impressions that pull and push between abstract and realistic. My subject matter ranges from distant cityscapes to intimate human portraits. I paint portraits of musicians, visual artists, and social leaders to celebrate their contributions as modern-day “Griots,” relaying history and influence to fuel our present culture. Regardless of the content I choose, I strive to keep the tone consistently vibrant and optimistic. |
