ADAMSTOWN—Sisters’ Gallery in Stoudtburg Village will host a new exhibit of selected works by two artists/cousins, Sybil Roe Thompson and Julia Cocuzza, entitled “From Uptown Reading & Downtown Brooklyn” opening on Sunday April 28 with an artists’ reception from 1-5 pm and running through June 27, 2010.

Reading artist Sybil Thompson has been featured at many local galleries including the Outsider Folk Art Gallery in the Goggleworks Center for the Arts and the Art Gallery of Reading Area Community College.  Having a phenomenal visual memory, Thompson is best known for her brightly-colored, vibrant interpretations of Reading’s architecture; however, in this show she moves in new directions.  She states, “Lately I’ve been working on abstract paintings, and I’ve always been inspired by stained glass windows, bright patterns, and flowers.  I have also painted wooden items, such as shelves, bowls, and candleholders, and have been experimenting with metallic colors.”

Brooklyn artist Julia Cocuzza was born and raised in Reading, graduated from Reading High, received her BFA in Visual Communication from Syracuse University, and is now a candidate in the MFA program of Brooklyn College.  She has shown her artwork at various galleries and venues in Reading and Berks, Syracuse, Philadelphia, Staten Island, Manhattan, and Brooklyn.  About this exhibit she writes: “The works selected are all inspired by the rhythms of city life and their pulsing colors, textures, and stories.  I examine scenes of music rituals inside bars and nightclubs, the physical artifacts that literally transmit these rhythms, and abstract studies where cityscapes and sound-scapes collide.  It’s an attempt to capture a few fleeting beats of a certain place and time: Brooklyn, lately.”

Beginning in April, Sisters’ Gallery will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm.  Or by appointment by calling 717-484-0858.
